Nuclear power plants and spent fuel storage facilities are among the most sensitive civil projects with respect to business risk, life safety, and regulatory concerns. These projects typically receive intensive public and regulatory scrutiny and require careful characterization of potential geologic hazards, as well as development of defensible earthquake design criteria. Fugro has extensive experience performing geologic, ground motion, and technical review for these critical facilities worldwide. Our personnel work closely with facility owners, engineering/construction companies, and regulatory agencies on many aspects of nuclear projects.
Fugro provides a broad range of services to support clients in developing Early Site Permit (ESP) and Construction and Operating Licenses (COL) applications. We are fully versed in nuclear QA/QC protocol and regulations, U.S. NRC and regulatory criteria, and International Atomic Energy Agency guidelines.
In addition to interaction with agencies on behalf of the licensee, we have developed new regulatory guidelines for the U.S. NRC (NUREG/CR 5562 and NUREG/CR 5503). We regularly provide input and guidance for various international agencies to review or develop new regulatory criteria pertaining to seismic and geologic hazard studies (e.g., Korean Institute of Nuclear Safety, Switzerland Institute of Nuclear Safety). To support these services, Fugro maintains a QA Program that meets the requirements defined by the U.S. NRC in 10 CFR 50, Appendix B, and by the U.S. nuclear power industry in NQA-1-1994.
We work closely with owners and licensees to develop a practical approach for addressing regulatory criteria and can also serve as the technical liaison to regulatory agencies.
