Engineering Geophysics

What you can’t see does matter.

Geophysical survey methods produce non-intrusive results and can help manage unknown risks. It is particularly beneficial in understanding subsurface conditions and their impact on design and construction costs. Our professionals provide relevant and appropriate geophysical studies through applied knowledge of geophysical methods, geology, and engineering. Services include:

  • Archaeological surveying
  • Electrical logging
  • Geological mapping
  • Ground penetrating radar
  • Refraction Microtremor (ReMi) shear wave velocity estimates (for building code site classification)
  • Right-of-way surveys
  • Subsurface hazard and void detection
  • Subsurface utility location
  • Vibration monitoring

Offshore, Fugro Consultants conducts geophysical studies to assess marine geohazards and their potential effects on new and existing facilities. Seismic data collection, processing, and interpretation technology has undergone dramatic technological advances over the past two decades. Fugro offers the highest level of 2D and 3D seismic survey technology available to assess geohazards. We provide equipment, vessels, and personnel to acquire, process, and evaluate high-resolution geophysical data including:

  • Seafloor features, man-made underwater hazards, and shallow geologic features
  • Underwater earthquake faulting
  • Unstable sediments on seafloor slopes

Fugro also performs airborne geophysical surveys to characterize soil conditions. The survey data assists in mapping soil types from the surface to a depth of approximately 100 feet by measuring changes in ground resistivity. Aerial surveys can map changing soil types and conditions, such as river bed deposits (sand- and gravel-filled paleochannels) and clay-rich floodplain materials. The survey also can be used to interpret soil water content in the examination area.
