Fugro part of private sector initiative to develop Poseidon Atlantic in Virginia
A first of its kind offshore wind turbine test and certification facility
Virginia’s Eastern Shore is on the cusp of becoming the North American leader in the testing and certification of large offshore and land-based electricity-producing wind turbines. The Commonwealth of Virginia, Northampton County and a consortium of companies are collaborating on the project, called Poseidon Atlantic, which would be the first such test facility.
According to Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, “The Poseidon Atlantic project is transformational for the future development of offshore wind technology, as there is currently a worldwide lack of facilities that are suitable for full-service certification testing of offshore wind turbine technology.

Post-Earthquake Studies in Haiti
Fugro personnel served as Engineering Geologist/ Seismic lead for two National Science Foundation-funded Geoengineering Extreme Event Reconnaissance (NSF-GEER) teams for post-earthquake field evaluations of the January 12, 2010 Haiti earthquake. Responsibilities focused on evaluation and mapping of surface ground rupture, tectonic deformation (coastal uplift), liquefaction/lateral spread, and slope failures. Fugro continued participation with the GEER teams to perform follow-on detailed mapping and microzonation studies of Port-au-Prince, focusing on correlation of damage patterns to geologic conditions, and shear wave velocity-correlated microzonation map units. Numerous papers and presentations were co-authored with local Haitian Bureau of Mines and Geology, Planning groups, the U.S. Geological Survey, and United Nations (UN) reconstruction teams, presenting the results from the studies. Fugro’s key participation in UN-funded training workshops in Haiti provided technology transfer for use of resulting microzonation maps for reconstruction, and input/training for improved building code and practice.
